In Texas, there are currently only three licensed marijuana operators who can provide medicine to qualifying patients. One of these companies, Texas Original, is proud to have provided medicine to more than 25,000 residents.
The company began operating in 2018 and has since continued to expand due to increasing demand. They hope to expand even further and open a full time retail location in East Texas.
The Texas Compassionate Use Act allows doctors to prescribe medical cannabis, and patients with a prescription can purchase marijuana with a THC content under 1%. That's not very much at all.
THC is not only the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, but it is also one of the strongest and more beneficial cannabinoids in the plants. Medical marijuana with this low of THC content may still help some, but many people require something stronger.
What Can I Get at the Dispensary?
Since smoking is not allowed in the State of Texas, there is no flower sold at dispensaries. Vape products are also not available for purchase. Qualified patients can basically only purchase gummies, tinctures, lozenges, and low THC oil.
In order to go to any Texas dispensary, you will need to be diagnosed with a qualifying condition. Luckily, Texas has over 145 conditions that make a person eligible for medical cannabis.
When Will the Program Expand?
Although Texas does have a medical marijuana program, it is too small to fully meet the needs of Texas patients. There are only three dispensing organizations in the entire state but over 37,000 patients.
It is also estimated that this number will increase by 300% by the end of 2023. With the growing number of medical marijuana patients, we are hopeful that Texas lawmakers will push for the expansion of the program even further.
There are two things you can do today to lend a hand to the expansion of Texas’ medical marijuana program.
First, let your state representatives know how you feel about Texas’ overly restrictive medical marijuana program. Second, support the cause by finding out if you qualify for a Texas Marijuana Card, and get one if you do.
Reserve an evaluation online today with one of our qualified, compassionate doctors, and we’ll book an appointment for you just as we’re cleared to.
